Ni Hao!
As you might have guessed from the title of this post i’m moving to Shenzhen, China for work.
Shenzhen (prounounced Shen-Jen) is in the Guangdong province, which means not much to me except another instance of the word “dong” in a Chinese word. For any foreign readers, in the US ‘dong’ means a peenor. A peenor means a penis.
I will be moving to the Luohu/Dong Men area. I don’t really know what to expect or how cheap/not cheap apartments will be there. I’ve heard wildly conflicting reports. I’m also a little worried that I won’t make any friends and i’ll just live some depressing Dilbert type of life.
I know nothing about China.
I have a camera.
I like to drink Tsingtao beer.
I’ve been thrown out of several dozen bars.
This will be interesting.
(Advice please)

Dont move to china.
You are american.
You can find a job here
People only move to china when they have lost their mojo in the USA
have u lost your mojo?
I haven’t. I have a good life here. I will miss my friends and family, my current clients that i’ve built up— and yes I could probably find another job doing the same things i’ve been doing for the last few years.. but with the move to china I can work in a different sector that is more portable, can ultimaltely make and save more money and have some new experiences and adventures at the same time. The other more pressing concern is that if I don’t do it now, I won’t ever do it.
That is probably the most important part. This just-turned-30 ennui is very important to this decision, and whether it cures it or not is sort of immaterial.
I am going to make a grown up type of comment here. I applaud your sense of adventure, because you would basically have to put a gun to my head to make me take a job in China, but that doesn’t mean I don’t admire people who do stuff like this. Well, actually it does, but my xenophobia is a whole different comment. I’m a little skittish about the communism thing, but I reckon you can handle it.
With all love, I wish you the best, my little internet friend. You are one smart and funny motherfucker. Just be safe and come home soon-ish.
Andy!! we should hang out in shenzhen when I get back in summer 10′. I know a few other Americans there and will take you to eat snake/dog/silk worm of your choice.
